★ Audi 80
The Audi 80 was a compact Executive car produced by the division of Audi Volkswagen group through four generations from 1966 to 1996. It shares its platform with the Volkswagen Passat from 1973 to 1986 and was available as a sedan and station wagon), the second manufacturer or the Audi as the avant-garde. The coupe and convertible models were not badged as members of the series, but uses a derivative of the same platform.
In North America and Australia, the 80 was sold as the Audi Fox for model years 1973-79, and as the Audi 4000 for model years 1980-87 in the USA. The Audi 90 was an upmarket version of the Audi 80, though all North American sedans generation V4 was called Audi 90.
1. The naming Convention. (Соглашение об именовании)
Under Audis platform numbering Convention, 80 is classified as a member of the B or B platform car family, with four generations of the 80 numbered as B1, B2, B3 and B4, its replacement – Audi A4 continues that consistency with the platform numbers for B5 and B9. Initially, this numbering scheme was held simultaneously with the Volkswagen Passat first generation, which was essentially a badge engineered clone of the Audi 80. This link was broken in 1988 when the Passat has moved the reviews, a transverse engine, the Volkswagen platform for their 80-unbound B3 and B4 versions. It was again based on the Audi A4 B5 platform or "8D" for your B5 generation, and returned to once again cross for his B6 and generations.
2. F103 1966-1972
Audi F103 series, based on the DKW F102 but with an all new series of four-stroke engines developed in conjunction with the "Daimler-Benz", was sold between 1965 and 1972. It consisted of several models named for their horsepower ratings. From 1966 to 1969, this series included an Audi 80, Audi 60, 72, 75 and 90 models in stock for many years.
3. B1 1972-1978. (Б1 1972-1978)
This model debuted in Europe in 1972 as the Audi 80 and in 1973 in Australia and North America, Canada and the United States as the Audi Fox, and was available as a two-door or four-door sedan sedan. It actually took the place of several models that Audi had discontinued the F103 series, which included the first model designated as an "Audi 80", and provided the company with a viable rival to the Opel Ascona and the Ford Taunus Ford Cortina in the UK and more prestigious offers, including the Alfa Romeo Alfetta and the Triumph Dolomite.
The Audi 80 B1 was only the second modern era of Audis product that will be developed exclusively under the ownership of Volkswagen - Audis chief engineer Ludwig Kraus was famously reviled outgoing F103 series, calling him "bastard" because of his Auto Union / DKW body and the Mercedes-Benz engine. B1 was to break since the Auto Alliance, are equipped.the complex is brand new 1.3 - and 1.5-liter SOHC inline-four petrol engines - the first appearance of the now legendary series EA827 engines, whose descendants are still in use in VW group vehicles today. Internal combustion engines were available in various rated power. For the 1.3-litre engine identification code: za has been estimated at 55 HP 40 kW, 54 HP, code: ZF was estimated at 60 HP 44 kW 59 HP. the 1.5 l codes: ZB, CC 75 HP 55 kW 74 HP For the ZB and 85 HP 63 kW, 84 HP For CC.
In the domestic market, two - and four - door sedans were available in base trim, as models L LS engine with 75 HP or more luxurious GL 85 HP Only. In September 1973, Audi added the sporty 80 gt In two-door with a carbureted 1.6-litre engine code: XX, rated at 100 HP 74 kW, 99 HP.
Audi 80 had a MacPherson strut front suspension, and cesarean beam rear axle located trailing arms and Panhard rod, and using coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers.
Audi design and development for European car of 1973, a competition where the 80 won ahead of the Renault 5 and Alfa Romeo Alfetta.
A facelift in autumn 1976 brought about a revised front end in the style of the new Audi 100 C2 with square instead of round headlights, 1.6 instead of 1.5-litre engines continued 75 / 85 HP and a new 80 GTE model with a fuel-injected version of the 1.6-liter 110 HP 81 kW, 108 HP), replacing the former 80 GT.
In some markets a five-door "avant", Audis name for an estate / wagon variant will be offered - effectively a rebadged Volkswagen Passat with Audi front panels. This version, first seen in mid-1975, appeared in the United States of America, South Africa and several other countries.
Fox was originally a 1.5-litre engine producing 55 HP 41 kW, 56 HP, attached to a four-speed manual transmission. Came subsequent version with a 1.6-liter engine 83 HP 62 kW, 84 HP. By 1978, more stringent emissions standards mean that it is decreased to 78 HP 58 kW, 79 HP. Four-speed manual or three-speed automatic was on offer, in all three bodystyles. In addition to the required large bumpers, early models looked very similar to their European counterparts, while a restyled version of the model 1977 he received a large black grille with round dual headlamps, without trim turn signals to use elsewhere. There was also a sporty GTI package on offer in later years. The B1 platform was dropped on the European market in 1978, although it was sold into the 1979 model year in North America.
4. B2 1978-1986. (Б2 1978-1986)
Audi introduced a redesigned 80 based on the platform B2 Type 81 in September 1978 and deliveries of the four-door sedan began a few weeks later in Europe. Delivery of the fuel injected GLE and two door bodied cars began in 1979. The redesigned car was first seen in North America in 1979 as a 1980 model. Audi continues to use the 80 nameplate in Europe, but badged as a type 81 Audi 4000 in North America. Case B2 Audi 80 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. No avant variant was available, as the Volkswagen Passat filled that role, as B2 is designed to move 80 prestigious of the middle segment of the family compact model pitched to compete with the BMW 3 series. B2 also acted in a de facto sense, as a replacement for the ill-fated NSU Ro 80, which ceased production last year with Audi for the brand NSU fully after the death vehicles. The appropriate version of the B2 Passat appeared two years later, and although the two cars share the same platform and chassis as before, the Passat was much stronger visual style differs from its sister Audi 80 in comparison with Q1.
80s first became available with four-wheel drive in 1983. The model is essentially an UR-quattro without turbocharger and with a sedan. All-wheel drive 80, however, weighed more than the front-wheel drive Audi 100 CD with the same 2144 CC 136 HP 100 kW 134 HP and worse aerodynamics have been slower than larger, better equipped and more affordable 100. The rate of 187 and 199 km / h 116 and 124 mph, respectively, with similar fuel economy benefits for the big 100. 80 Quattro got two headlights, front spoiler with integrated foglights, and painted in the body color rubber spoiler on the back. There was also "Quattro" script on the trunk lid and dual exhaust. The Luggage compartment was somewhat smaller, mainly in height, which meant it could be installed a temporary spare wheel. 80 Quattro was a bargain compared to the UR-quattro, but to a lesser extent compared with the monodrive GTE 80 or 100 CDs, although they do not offer impressive road holding what to do quattros.
In Europe, the 80 was the standard model, while after a 1984 facelift the Audi 90 was launched in the larger engine version of the 80s, with lots of options, and, except 70 HP 51 kW, 69 HP, four-cylinder, 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine td, which was also available for the 80, two five-cylinder in-line petrol engines - a 2.0-liter with 115 HP 85 kW, 113 HP and 2.2-liter with 136 HP 100 kW 134 HP, which was later converted to 2.3 liters. The 2.2-liter was available with a catalyst and a capacity of 115 HP 85 kW, 113 HP engine for front-drive and 120 PS 88 kW, 118 BHP For quattro models. European models had two control casings, while North American models generally had Quad headlamps.
In 1983 the 80 sport was introduced in the UK, based on GTD. It came with Quattro-style Ronal alloys, rubber rear spoiler, deep chin spoiler, striped charcoal Recaro interior, and optional graphics adapter, the body including a full-length "Audi Sport" stripes. In USA, special anniversary edition, the Audi 4000CS Quattro, was made in 1985, 1986 and 1987 model years.
Mid-1984, for the 1985 model year, Audi gave the B2 a subtle facelift with tail lights resembling those of the type 44 Audi 100, and different front and rear bumpers and headlights and an updated interior. In Europe, engines with catalytic emission control of the Converter was presented for the first time. 1.6 - and 1.8-liter engines was replaced by a newer version of the same that allows fitment of catalytic converters.
The B2 platform proved to be quite versatile and quite profitable, many components were shared to or borrowed from the Audi coupé, Audi Quattro and Audi Sport quattro, which in the process helped to consolidate the company in the public eye after their quattro permanent four-wheel-drive system proved useful in various forms of racing.
The saloons were offered until late 1986 in Europe and 1987 abroad, and the B2-based Audi coupé lasted until 1988 and early 1989 as a model before being changed. The coupe shares many components, and its basic body shape, with the original Audi Quattro.
4.1. B2 1978-1986. 1980-1987 4000 & 4000 5
The North American Audi 4000 was first introduced for the 1980 model year, with 1588 CC inline-four with 76 HP 57 kW. This engine came in for some criticism, being a little buzzy and inadequate for a car in this price segment. Audi does not offer an automatic transmission, since the engine couldnt handle. A five-speed gearbox was not available until the 1981 model year. In 1981, 4.000 were long-stroke 1.7-liter engine and standard five-speed manual with three-speed automatic still available. The new engine was fifty-state version with a three-way catalyst, and the capacity has dropped to 74 HP 55 kW. However, a larger torque and a new gearbox is translated into increased productivity and improved gas mileage.
The Audi 4000 5 was launched on the American market in 1981 model year. 5 was essentially an 80 B2 two-door sedan with 100 HP 101 HP, 75 kW 2144 CC five-cylinder engine with between 5.000 and five-speed gearbox, the predecessor of what would become the Audi 90. Have different sports items, such as oil pressure sensor, sports interior and alloy wheels, also in the us market 4000S. It is much more prosaic, but well-equipped four-door version with the same engine, initially only in combination with three-speed automatic.
After the facelift it was sold in North America in the 4000S 1.8-liter and 4000CS Quattro 2.2 litre derivatives, with the CS Quattro very similar to the European Audi 90 Quattro. The Audi 4000 Quattro debuted in 1984 and was sold in four colors, black, Alpine White, Tornado Red, and optional Zermatt silver metallic. It came standard with a five-speed manual transmission, brown velour interior, and power Windows in front and manual in the rear. The first Audi 4000s was very similar to the Audi 80 with the addition of USA mandated crash safety bumpers and Quad sealed beam headlights. Mount for bumper security invaded the floor of the trunk, making for a very irregular shape and less usable space.
In S has a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which produces 76 kW 103 HP, 102 HP at 5500 rpm. CS quattro has a CIS-e fuel-injected 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder petrol identification engine code: JT. It displaces 2226 CC, and was constructed of gray cast iron cylinder block with aluminum alloy cylinder head, and uses timing belt with a single overhead camshaft SOHC. Rated power is 86 kW 117 HP, 115 HP at 5500 rpm, and torque is 171 N * m 126 lbf⋅ft at 3000 rpm. The only transmission available on the 4000CS was a five-step guidelines.
4.2. B2 1978-1986. Audi 5 Australia. (Ауди 5 Австралия)
5 the Audi name was used in the Australian market, and a door Audi 80 is mounted 2144 CC five-cylinder and five-speed manual transmission. The automatic option was also offered. 5 was sold in Australia from October 1981 to 1983.
5. B3 1986-1992. (Б3 1986-1992)
In September 1986, Audi released a new type 89 Audi 80 for the 1987 model year on the European market and introduced it elsewhere within a year. It was based on a new platform which broke the relationship between 80 and VW Passat, the third generation, which uses a transverse engine layout Volkswagen B3 platform, while Audi stuck with a longitudinal front wheel drive layout for B3-series 80. The production codes were Type 89 from 1987 to 1989, and the type 8A since 1990 in line with the restructuring of many of the symbols in a Volkswagen platform. He introduced a new aerodynamic look and a fully zinc coated galvanised body.
Unlike its predecessor, the B3 was sold worldwide only as the Audi 80 or Audi 90. Initially, Audi transferred existing powertrain concept for the new model, although fuel injection is currently available for some engines. A range of new petrol and diesel inline four-cylinder engines became available to European customers along with the procon-ten safety system which became standard in 1991.
With procon-Ten was a remarkable feature of the security, including the number of hidden steel cables that pass over the transmission, is mounted on the steering wheel and the front seatbelts are of the inertia reel. In the event of a frontal impact, the engine and box is forced back, by pulling on these cables. This action simultaneously pulls the steering wheel on the dashboard to alert the driver when faced with it when tightening the straps. This innovation was a precursor to the airbag, which became popular in mass production of cars, in the 1990s, years after the fact, patented by Mercedes-Benz in 1982.
In 1987, the Audi 90 was restored as a prestigious, more luxurious variant of the 80. To begin with, what is that again there is a choice of 10-valve inline five-cylinder petrol engines, and can be defined with or without Quattro. In the 90 differs visually up to 80 full-width tail-light panel, lights, which describes the additional driving lights and a slightly different radiator grille. Indicator lights have been moved from the headlights to the bumper next to the fog lights that were standard fitment on 90. The trim surrounds on the Windows, the upper part of the bumpers and side rubbing strips were also standard. The interiors have been upgraded over 80 coated velour seats and a little more generous equipment. Then the range 2.2 e proposed boot spoiler, alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and sports front seats. Switchable ABS was standard on the quattro versions.
From 1989 to 1991 Audi 90 is the first 20-valve engine from Audi after the turbo engine used in the Audi Sport Quattro. This new 2.3-liter engine produces 170 HP 125 kW 168 HP and front wheel drive 20V sport and four-wheel drive 20V Quattro derivatives in. Non-Quattro 20V models was 120 kg lighter.
Externally, the sports version 90 can be visually distinguished the removal of the veneer in favor of satin black trim, baseboards thinner bumper and side moldings. Raised aluminum boot spoiler, lowered suspension and the brakes were fitted as standard, Speedline wheels were also standard fitment in the UK.
In October 1988, the coupé version based on the 80s / 90 appeared, called simply Audi coupe type 8B. This is a completely different three-door liftback body and replaced the earlier, the B2-based coupe, which was made in early 1988. This version remained in production until 1996, along with subsequent generation B4 Audi 80. The convertible was planned from the beginning, but will not appear until may 1991 as the Audi convertible. This model remained in production until 2000, and optically aligned with the Audi 80 B4 of its implementation.
Overall, the Audi 80 came with the following engine range, although not all of them were available on all markets:
The Audi 90 came with the following 5-cylinder engines:
5.1. B3 1986-1992. North America. (Северная Америка)
In 1989, for the 1990 model year, North America received the model 90 Quattro and coupe quattro, which was powered by a detuned 164 HP 122 kW, 166 HP 20V 2.3 litre 5-cylinder engine. It was sold in the "Grand touring" GT style luxury car with sporting tendencies, as opposed to a dedicated lightweight sports car. Weighing 3.042 kg model sedan 1.380 kg in 1990 to 3.308 kg 1.500 kg model coupe 1991, these cars were not lightweight, especially considering the 164 HP Powerplant slightly less than the European version. These models can be recognized by their distinctive wheels, 14" bbs mesh wheel or the 15" Speedlines Six stars. They differ from the usual 80 / 90 models in several ways. Notable differences include standard leather interior with wood finish, additional sensors mounted in the bottom of the center console, carbon fiber center driveshaft, and a button locking rear differential.
The last type 89 80s and 90s was sold in 1992 models in North America, Europe, all the type 89 sedan was discontinued at the end of the 1991 model year to give way to the B4 series, several Audi 90 Sport quattro with the 2.3-litre 20V engine, however, as we know, came from the conveyors in early 1992.
6. B4 1991-1996. (В4 1991-1996)
Audi 80 B3 got a major facelift in the autumn of 1991, despite the yield on the UK market and was not until early 1992. It was since then known internally as the B4 or Typ 8C. The changes from the B3 included a longer wheelbase, a fully redesigned fuel tank and rear axle, enabling the use of folding seats, 15" wheels with more prominent wheel arches, redesigned and painted rear and front bumpers, as well as better materials for the interior and a large boot. The front grille was merged with the hood and gave a bold look. This design was viewed in 1990, the Audi S2 coupe and was applied in full force B3-based coupe, as well as in July 1991. Convertible type 8G was introduced in may 1991 and continued to be built long after the B4 was replaced, after receiving similar upgrades for Audi 80 B4 and the upcoming Audi A4.
On the B4 also marked the beginning of Audis move into luxury German middle segment of the ship, which until then was clearly dominated by Mercedes-Benz and BMW. In the European market, and Germany in particular, the B4 and its variants have been very successful and popular.
In Europe, 90 marking on five-cylinder models were dropped for this generation, and all saloons were badged as 80, regardless of which engine they had. Audi of America went the other way, and sold in the salon in 90. B4s for the American market typically offered more luxury and style, even in the standard version, such as automatic transmission, cruise control, air conditioning and leather seats, which were usually optional at additional cost or standard on the European model.
Because the United States does not recognise the international ECE regulations on components of safety and structures, and maintains its own Federal safety standards for motor vehicles, the front of the B4 had to be specially redesigned for vehicles sold in North America. Front and bumper must be designed to be absorbers of impact energy is not required outside of North America. Instead of double-reflector headlamps, a single-reflector design was used in amber combination turn signal, Parking, side marker lamp and reflector wrapping around the corner, and fog lamps smaller than the rest of the world items were placed the corners of the bumper air duct.
European market cars are now available with a wide selection of inline-four-cylinder engines, as well as the familiar in-line five, and two different new V6 engines, the 2.6-liter and 2.8-liter, later 2.8-litre V6 was the only engine available for vehicles sold in North America. And another first, Audi introduced a new high-torque, direct injection, turbocharged diesel engine, 66 kW 90 HP, 89 HP, 1.9-litre TDI with turbocharged and direct injection. A standard 1.8-litre petrol engine of the B3 was discontinued, and a two-liter, 66 kW 90 HP, 89 HP, four-cylinder petrol engine, a variation of the previously known 85 kW 116 HP, 114 HP, 2.0 e engine, is now available for the base model.
Overall, although some layouts were not everywhere outside Germany, Audi offered the following range of engines for 80 / 90 B4:
- 2.0 E – 85 kW 116 HP, 114 HP, In-line four-cylinder.
- 2.8 e – 128 kW 174 HP, 172 HP, V6.
- 2.0 – 66 kW 90 HP, 89 HP, In-line four-cylinder base model in Germany.
- PC2 avant – 232 kW 315 HP, 311 HP, 2.2 l, 20-valve turbocharged inline five-cylinder.
- 1.8 e 20V – 92 kW 125 PS, 123 HP, inline four-cylinder.
- 2.6 E – 110 kW 150 HP, 148 HP, V6.
- 1.6 e 74 kW 101 HP, 99 HP, inline four-cylinder.
- S2 – 169 kW 230 HP and 227 HP, 2.2 l, 20-valve turbocharged inline five-cylinder.
- 1.6 – 51 kW 69 HP, 68 HP, In-line four-cylinder-only export.
- 2.3 e 10V – 98 kW 133 HP, 131 HP, 10-valve, inline five-cylinder.
- 2.0 e 16V – 103kw 140 PS, 138 HP, 16-valve, inline four-cylinder.
- 1.9 TDI 66 kW 90 HP, 89 HP, In-line four-cylinder direct injection turbodiesel with intercooler.
- 1.9 TD 55 kW 75 HP 74 HP, In-line four-cylinder turbodiesel.
Most petrol versions could be ordered with Quattro permanent four-wheel drive, at that time, however, it can only be combined with five-speed manual transmission. Additionally, Audi built about 2500 units of the Quattro competition for the German and European market. It was a street homologation of the B4-based super Tourenwagen Cup STW race car sedan with all-wheel drive and a 140 PS 138 HP, 103 kW, 16-valve, two-litre petrol engine. Transmission had its roots in the two-litre, four-cylinder in-line engine that most European Audi 80s years were equipped with at the time. Outside, the Quattro competition featured the same bumpers as the S2, V6 headlights, and rear wing mounted on the trunk lid. Together with C2 and PC2 avant Quattro competition is becoming increasingly rare and sought after collectors.
Along with the interior of the Audi B4 is made on the basis of the property, Audi 80 avant, and a convertible, the Audi cabriolet, which was largely based on the B3 coupe. This meant that Audi now had sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon variants of the 80 available to European customers. For the North American market, however, Audi coupe sold for 1990 and 1991 model year, and universal never officially available.
As a 1994 model, limited edition model, known as "Europe" was introduced in the European market. It can be ordered as a sedan and avant. It was equipped with factory electric mirrors, alloy wheels, rear seat headrests, an airbag steering wheel, and offered the choice between a sunroof or air conditioning. It came in five different special colors. For "regular" 1994 B4 saloons and Avants, standard features as well as options available were activated, including the steering wheel with the airbag and revised standard ear door and passenger airbags and a built-in engine immobilizer is optional.
In the 80-series was effectively replaced by the new Audi A4 in 1996, a variant of the 1998 B5 VW Passat. By the time he felt very old compared to more modern models, like the BMW E36. Production ceased at the moment when the prestige of the European manufacturers making the transition senior Executive saloons on new models based on new platforms in a compact body of Executive power in the car market.
On the B4 sedan was discontinued at the end of 1994. Vanguard only built for left-hand drive markets, and never sold in the UK, released in 1995, and coupled with the immediate replacement followed in 1996. The convertible, however, continued in production until August 2000. On the B4 platform sedan was replaced by the Audi A4 1995 model year 1996 in North America, followed by a new A4 avant later in 1996 - sold right-hand drive for the UK market for the first time. Mid-size convertible was not available again until 2002, when the A4 Cabriolet was introduced. Since 2007, Audi has made an Audi A5 - which is similar in concept to the old 80-based coupe.
6.1. B4 1991-1996. Audi S2. (Ауди С2)
Audi developed a sports version of the coupé in 1990, called the Audi S2 coupe. This replaced the famous Audi Quattro and was capable of 150 miles per hour. In 1993, C2 has received some cosmetic updates, including new AVUS style alloy wheels, ellipsoid projector headlamps and clear front lenses. This coincided with the introduction of the five-door S2 avant, along with a limited edition of four-door S2 sedan models of which 306 were produced. The S2 sedan and Avant have a lot of similarities in the system of rear support of the bridge to the later B5 A4 Quattro. The B4 platform S2 Avant was also used between 1993 and 1995 as the basis for Audi PC2 avant super-sports estate, which was modified for Audi with assistance from Porsche.
6.2. B4 1991-1996. Audi avant PC2. (Ауди РС2 Авант)
Audi avant PC2 is equipped with a similar 2.2-litre turbocharged engine to the S2, but producing 232 kW 315 HP, 311 horsepower. It can accelerate from 0-100 km / h 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 262 km / h 163 km / h.
Audi PC2 generally was available only as avant, although four 4-door sedan models officially produced by the factory, including one for the leader programme for the development of PC2. In PC2 was at least partially assembled at the Rossle-BAU factory of Porsche in Zuffenhausen. To manufacture PC2, pipeline Porsche in Zuffenhausen was busy manufacturing the high-performance W124 body Mercedes-Benz 500E. The link PC2 / Porsche, as evidenced by the RS2s dual system diagram of a brake Porsche wear Brembo calipers with a Porsche name, 7.0Jx17" alloy wheels that were identical in design to the Porsche 911 Turbo wheels of that era, and side mirrors are also borrowed from the Porsche 911 Turbo. In addition, the word "Porsche" is inscribed in PC2 the logo of the manufacturer affixed to the tailgate and front grille, and on the engines intake manifold. Porsche modified the avant S2 body optics, added more power, better brakes, big sway bars front and rear, fine tuned the interior – born super-sports estate. Porsches participation in the project was on the strict understanding that a coupe model will not be made as it was deemed to be too close to Porsches own products.
