★ Mary Elizabeth Wilson

Mary Elizabeth Wilson, also known as a Merry widow or a nook, was a serial killer and the last woman sentenced to death in Durham, in 1958. However, the sentence was not carried out as it was replaced by imprisonment.

Wilsons maiden name Mary Elizabeth Cassidy was born on 11 Jun 1889 in Catchgate, Stanley, co. Durham, and baptized June 30, 1889 in the virgin Mary and St Joseph, brooms, Colorado. Durham. She married her first husband John Knowles in around November 1914. They settled in the house or in a nook, Gateshead. Her beloved John Russell eventually moved in with him. In 1955, Knowles died. She waited five months prior to marrying Russell. Her second husband died in 1956 or early 1957. The attending physician declared that both men died from natural causes. Wilson inherited their money, £42.

In June 1957, Wilson married her third husband, Oliver Leonard, a former real estate agent. He died only 12 days after the wedding, leaving her £50. Soon she married a fourth husband, Ernest Wilson. His property included up to$ 100, bungalows and life insurance. He died during the year. This time she did not even bother to come to the funeral.

By this time, Wilson became a major figure of local gossip, as the frequency at which her spouses died and her rather cheerful attitude towards the pattern, she joked at her last wedding that the rest of the sandwiches will be fresh enough to use in following the funeral. She also asked for a trade discount from the local Undertaker, for providing him a lot of business. These cases morbid humor brought her to the attention of the police.

The exhumation of the bodies of her last two husbands revealed high levels of phosphorus. Her defence claimed the substance contained in their medication. Wilson was convicted of murdering two of her four husbands with beetle poison in 1956 and 1957. Remnants of her earlier two husbands were exhumed later and stated the same causes of death. There is no reason, however, to have a second test.

While Wilson was sentenced to death, her advanced age allowed her to get a reprieve. Her sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. She died while in custody in prison.
